ARTIFICIAL GHOST
There was once a fruit called the banana.
For millions of years it existed as biology—a flowering plant converting sunlight into sugar, its chemistry refined by evolution and later reshaped by human cultivation.
Entire landscapes were devoted to its reproduction.
Ships crossed oceans carrying it.
Children learned its name before they could pronounce it.
Then it disappeared.
Whether by disease, climate, war, or simple contingency no longer mattered. Extinction is indifferent to its method.
Humanity responded as it always had.
It manufactured a substitute.
Not another banana.
A memory that behaved like one.
The synthetic flavor outlived the fruit by centuries. It spread farther than the organism had ever managed, entering candies, medicines, cereals, ice cream, scented markers, chewing gum, nutritional drinks, and countless other products that no longer required the fruit itself.
For generations, millions encountered “banana” without ever encountering a banana.
Eventually, the approximation became more common than the original.
Then the approximation disappeared as well.
Factories closed.
Recipes vanished.
Patents expired.
Chemical plants were dismantled.
The final reservoirs of synthetic banana were consumed, discarded, or simply lost.
Centuries later, engineers begin searching for banana.
Not in orchards.
Not in seed vaults.
Instead they excavate adhesive residues, oxidized syrups, vaporized esters trapped inside polymer seams, molecular graffiti beneath vending machines, fluorescent sugar dust fossilized inside lunchbox hinges, pediatric dosing spoons once filled with banana-flavored antibiotics, and trace aerosols absorbed into automobile upholstery.
This is not archaeology.
It is industrial paleontology.
No original fruit remained.
No original artificial flavor remained.
Nothing existed against which a reconstruction could be compared.
The objective was no longer accuracy.
It was recognition.

The engineers eventually synthesize TRUE BANANA.
Its chemistry has never existed in nature.
No historical banana—biological or artificial—ever possessed its molecular structure.
Yet blind trials repeatedly demonstrate that it is recognized as more banana than banana itself.
Chemically unprecedented.
Historically inaccurate.
Experientially flawless.
The public adopts it without hesitation.
Children born afterward defend its authenticity with complete sincerity.
To them, no other banana has ever existed.
The recursion is complete.
What was once imitation has become inheritance.
Civilizations do not preserve originals.
They preserve whatever must remain recognizable for culture to continue.
The banana did not survive.
Neither did its imitation.
What survived was agreement.
